President Uhuru Kenyatta today this evening wrapped up his tour of Nyeri County by launching the construction of the historic Ruringu Stadium.
President Kenyatta said the construction of the stadium is expected to be completed in six months time after which residents will be able to enjoy the services of a modern stadium.
The national Government is revamping the stadium at a cost of Kshs 250 million.
“Once completed, the stadium will help nurture the talents and sporting skills of the youth in this county,” President Kenyatta said.
The President spoke on Thursday when he addressed a huge public rally in Nyeri town after launching the rehabilitation of the historic Ruringu Stadium.
Earlier in the year,Sports Kenya Chairman Fred Muteti on Friday had already confirmed that work on the stadium had already began together with other counties like Tharaka Nithi Marsabit, Elgeyo Marakwet, Kiambu, Makueni and Uasin Gishu to fulfill the government’s pledge. In the 2015 Budget, Cabinet Secretary for Treasury Henry Rotich had allocated Sports Kenya Sh1.8 billion towards financing construction of six the stadiums.
“We have begun the process because the right infrastructure plays a great role in talent development. We will be employing the sports officers who previous worked with the department of sports to help start sports programme in every county. We will recruit more technical and professional staff and work closely with sports federations to ensure this mandate is fulfilled.”Said Mr.Muteti.
Sports Kenya will also partner with the Kenya Academy of sports to ensure that elite sports men and women selected into national teams get the right training and exposure so that they do well in international competitions.
